The First Middleyak Update of 2025: Fresh Designs, Smarter Choices, and Creative Growth
I don’t know why it has taken me so long to write this update to you all. Maybe because I haven’t done much since the middle of December? Realistically that’s not true. Maybe because I don’t have much to say? But that’s not really true either. I guess I just have to chalk it up to my books being too good to put down and good old procrastination.
So here we go with the first Middleyak update of 2025!
Gwen’s Record Tote in Smoked Paprika
Thank You for Your Support
Most importantly, thank you for being here. You all really came through for me at the end of 2024. In a time when the world is an ever growing dumpster fire, art and community matter more than ever. Art allows us to resist, speak up, and create spaces we believe in. Middleyak is more than a hobby and some cute little bags, it is my way of saying, “I see you. I’m here for you. I create for you.”
Fresh Designs and Brighter Colors
This year, you’ll see brighter colors and creative twists on my classic silhouettes. Case in point: my first project of 2025, Gwen’s Record Tote.
Gwen, the lovely owner of Blind Rage Records, asked me for a pretty bag to carry a shit ton of records. After experimenting with a few terrible designs, I nailed it with a bad ass tote in a beautiful red-orange leather I’m calling Smoked Paprika. While you’ll only ever find one of Gwen’s Record Tote in Smoked Paprika, she and I both decided the design is too good to not repeat. Stay tuned for future variations of this bag (and other designs in Smoked Paprika).
A Note on Commissions
If you’ve read my policies, you know I don’t typically accept custom work. But Gwen’s commission was different. First she is cool as shit. Second, she respected my artistic style and asked for a piece that fit within it. That’s the key: my commissions only work if they align with my construction style and creative vision.
If you have a specific function or style in mind and think it matches what I already create, don’t hesitate to reach out. We might both be surprised by the answer and outcome.
Smarter Strategies for Markets and Events
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned in 2024 is the importance of choosing markets and events wisely. While some larger events left me with mediocre sales and a big dent in my budget, others, have proven their worth.
In 2025, I’m sticking with established markets and focusing on events with lower costs of entry. This way, I can keep my bank account full and dedicate more resources to what I love: crafting leather goods that stand out.
Want to see Middleyak at more local events? Tell your favorite shops about me! I’d love to collaborate on small pop-up events or wholesale opportunities. And don’t forget, my website is always open for Made-to-Order pieces and quarterly drops of ready-made goods.
With that, I’m off to the studio. Thank you for being here.
With love,
Marissa
